Choosing a process / 3 min read
CNC or 3D printing? Start with the job.
The right process depends on what you are testing, not just what the object looks like.
When CNC is worth reviewing
Consider machining when the specified stock material, mating surfaces, threads or machined finish are central to the job. Tool access and geometry still need to be assessed.
When printing is worth reviewing
Consider 3D printing for complex shapes, rapid form studies and prototypes that do not justify a mould. Material properties, orientation and post-processing vary by printing technology.
Sometimes the answer is both
A prototype may combine a printed shell, a machined dial and a folded stand. Assess the interfaces and tolerances across the assembly, rather than choosing each part in isolation.
