Small-batch thinking / 3 min read
Why one part rarely costs one hundredth.
A small order can be a smart decision. It helps to know which costs stay the same.
Setup happens before the first part
Programming, fixturing, material preparation and machine setup may be needed even for one part. Printing can reduce some setup demands, but introduces its own preparation and finishing work.
Small changes can simplify production
Removing unnecessary tight tolerances, using available stock and reducing difficult features can help. Any change must still satisfy the actual purpose of the part.
The trip matters too
Packaging and international delivery can be a significant share of a small order. Compare the delivered total and destination charges, not only the unit price.
Ask for a useful comparison
If you might need more later, ask for comparable quotes at your initial quantity and a realistic next quantity. Keep revision, material and inspection scope consistent.
