Start with the part a driver touches
Interior customisation often begins with colour, stitching or trim. A gear knob offers another starting point: the shape that the palm and fingers meet. This concept asks whether broad curved recesses could give a compact metal grip a more individual character, while keeping the silhouette simple enough to discuss as a machined assembly. The boot and lever provide visual context for that idea.
A rounded silhouette with a stronger rhythm
Longitudinal flutes break the satin silver surface into alternating highlights and shadows. A terracotta cap adds a small area of colour, and a dark lower collar separates the grip from the leather boot. The rounded shoulders matter as much as the grooves: their transitions would influence comfort, cleaning and the way a hand slides over the surface. The pictured arrangement is a visual study of those details.
Make the interface specific to the vehicle
The lever connection would drive the design underneath the grip. Threaded and non-threaded connections, boot retainers and reverse-lockout mechanisms can require different interfaces. Installed height, orientation and clearance through the control's travel would need checking against the actual vehicle. A useful custom version could retain the outer form while changing the adapter and lower collar; the image establishes no vehicle compatibility.
A possible machining and finishing route
Turning could be considered for the rotational features, with milling for the broad flutes and any indexing features. Tool access, workholding and the blend between recesses would need a drawing-based review. The coloured cap could be a separate component, allowing the body and accent to be finished individually. Material grade, mass, cap retention, edge treatment and the visible finish would be agreed together before making a sample.
What to include in the first brief
Identify the vehicle, model year and lever arrangement, then provide measurements or drawings of the actual interface. Include the reverse-lockout and boot-retainer movement where relevant, your preferred installed height, grip size, appearance, quantity and destination. A prototype fit and control-clearance check would come before approving an installed version. Cabin temperature exposure and the desired feel are also useful inputs when choosing materials and finishes.
