Ripple Dial: a small object made for a moment of play

A small object does not have to solve a large problem. Ripple Dial explores whether a few contrasting surfaces and a simple rotary gesture can make a desk object worth picking up.

01

The question behind the idea

Small physical objects can offer an interaction that a screen cannot: an edge to trace, a surface to turn and a change in resistance to notice. The starting question here is deliberately modest. Could a compact, unpowered object make those details interesting enough to become part of a desk or pocket routine?

02

A ripple you can touch

The concept combines a dark base, a finely ridged outer ring, a terracotta inner disc and a brass-coloured centre. The stepped levels give the thumb different places to rest. Colour and surface contrast help distinguish the parts without adding a display, lettering or an electronic function. The image explores this arrangement; it does not demonstrate working motion.

03

What could make it personal

The character could change through the profile of the grip, the relative ring sizes, the weight or the combination of matt and brushed surfaces. A quieter version might use one finish throughout; a more expressive version could emphasise the contrasting centre. The useful customisation question is how the object should feel and be handled, rather than simply which colour it should be.

04

A possible manufacturing direction

Turned or milled metal components could be discussed for the body and rings, with a separately planned spindle, retention method and assembly. Aluminium and brass are material directions suggested by the visual, not approved grades. The intended motion would need clearances, contact surfaces and finishing to be considered together. A render cannot establish whether a ring turns smoothly or remains securely retained.

05

What a first brief would need

Start with the intended size, handling, desired weight and whether the parts should rotate independently. Explain the preferred appearance, the quantity and any identification or packaging needs. The next step would be an engineering discussion about the mechanism and a controlled drawing set, followed by a manufacturing quotation for the agreed design. The mechanism, tactile feel and any durability requirements would be defined during that design work.

DESIGN NOTES

What gives the
idea its character.

  • Stepped surfaces invite different thumb positions
  • A ridged edge provides a visual and tactile contrast
  • Several finishes give a simple form its character
QUESTIONS BEFORE MAKING

What still needs
to be worked out.

  • Which parts should move, and how should they be retained?
  • What clearances, friction and edge treatment suit the intended use?
  • Should the finish apply before or after fitting and assembly?
