3D PRINTING / PRACTICAL MANUFACTURING GUIDE
3D printing file checklist
A shape study, an assembly test and a functional part need different decisions. Explain the purpose, then prepare the model and finished-part requirements for a printing review.
Describe what the part must do
State whether the priority is appearance, assembly, stiffness, impact resistance, temperature or another functional requirement. Identify loads and environmental exposure where they matter. A detailed render can communicate an idea, but it does not establish whether a particular material will perform the required function.
Review the process and grade together
Material-extrusion, resin-based and powder-based printing have different preparation and post-processing requirements. Name the exact grade if it is fixed. Otherwise, describe the properties you need and ask for suitable options. A generic “resin” or “nylon” label is not a complete performance specification.
Check scale and model integrity
State units and overall dimensions. Check exported meshes for open boundaries, overlapping shells and unintended gaps. If the model may need revision, supply editable geometry or STEP where available as well as the intended print file. Clearly identify the current revision when several exports are included.
Identify surfaces and support restrictions
Mark visible faces, delicate features and areas where support contact would be a problem. Build orientation and the selected process influence the appearance and accessibility of features. Share these priorities before the build is planned rather than assuming that every face will have the same surface condition.
Define interfaces and acceptance
Show the mating components and the features that control assembly. Identify holes, locating features, clearances and any required secondary operation. The printing resource needs to review the actual geometry and material. Agree how a fit or functional requirement will be checked after post-processing.
Specify the delivered condition
Confirm whether support removal, cleaning, curing, dyeing or cosmetic work is included. State quantity, finish, inspection needs and destination. Keep the selected process and material connected to the approved model; changing the grade or manufacturing method may require a new review of the intended use.
