CNC DESIGN / PRACTICAL MANUFACTURING GUIDE
Prepare a clearer CNC drawing
A useful CNC file set explains the geometry, the features that control function and the condition of the finished part. These checks help the manufacturing team review the work without guessing.
Identify datums and critical features
Mark the faces, bores and relationships that locate the part or control assembly. Explain what needs to fit, align, move or seal. Use an explicitly agreed general tolerance for other features, with specific requirements where necessary. Applying a tight value everywhere does not substitute for identifying the functional features.
Consider tooling and workholding
Internal pockets retain radii associated with the selected cutting method. Deep narrow features, undercuts and features on several sides can affect access and setup. Flag the difficult areas and explain their purpose. The manufacturing team needs to consider how the part is held as well as how the tool reaches it.
Specify threads and holes clearly
Give the thread standard, size, pitch and required depth. Distinguish a through hole from a blind hole, and drill depth from effective thread depth. Identify inserts and installation requirements where relevant. If a feature mates with a purchased item or another custom component, include the information needed to assess that interface.
Name the material and condition
Specify the actual alloy or polymer grade and any required condition. Explain whether alternatives can be reviewed. Stock form, material behaviour and the part geometry affect process planning; a label such as “aluminium” does not resolve all purchasing and finishing decisions.
Define the finished surfaces
Identify visible faces, surface treatment, edge treatment and any roughness requirement. Mark threads, locating faces or electrical contact areas that need masking. State whether critical dimensions apply before or after finishing. Use an approved appearance reference where colour or texture is part of acceptance.
Control files and approval
Supply the STEP model and matching PDF drawing with units, revision and quantities. Agree the inspection method, sampling and requested records with the quotation. Resolve any conflict before approval. A later drawing change needs a review of work already completed, additional cost and the effect on timing.
